Roedde House Museum in Vancouver's West End is a late-Victorian home in the Queen Anne revival style, built in 1893 for the family of Matilda & Gustav Roedde, the city's first bookbinder. It has been faithfully restored with period furnishing and family artefacts to reflect the day-to-day life of a middle class, immigrant family at the turn of the last century.

TOUR by: Lorraine Irving, (BC Genealogical Society & Mt View Cemetery tours) will speak on the tragic 1925 murder of young nurse Anna Catherine Roedde at Vancouver General Hospital. Lara Campbell, (Herstory Cafe & SFU Women’s Studies) will speak on Women & Domestic Service. 4th Annual Herstory Cafe Summer Picnic at Camp Vivian, Tea Swamp Park, Vancouver, BC.

This summer we are meeting at historic Tea Swamp Park in Mount Pleasant at the corner of 15th Ave and Sophia St (2 blocks east of Main St).

This little park was officially named Tea Swamp in 1985 after the Park Board was petitioned by the Brewery Creek Historical Society. A large swamp formed by a beaver dam once sat at this location. The swamp created an opening in the dense forest allowing vegetation to flourish, including Labrador tea plants (Royal BC Museum link).

Bring your own lunch, blanket or chair and your favourite women's history book or photograph and share its story with the group. Cancelled if raining. Look for the “Camp Vivian” banner.

Terrain of Memory: A Japanese Canadian Memorial Project. A talk by Kirsten Emiko McAllister
Japanese Canadian National Museum at the Nikkei Place, 6688 Southoaks Crescent, (just off Kingsway) Burnaby.

JCNM’s Speaker Series: Dr. McAllister will present her book Terrain of Memory which tells the story of the Japanese Canadian elders who built a memorial in New Denver, British Columbia, to transform a site of political violence into a space for remembrance. It shows how their memorial transformed the valley where once over 7,000 women, men, and children were interned into a pilgrimage site for Japanese Canadians where they can mourn and pay their respects to the wartime generation.

SPEAKER: Kirsten Emiko McAllister is an associate professor in the School of Communication at Simon Fraser University. For more about her book, Terrain of Memory: A Japanese Canadian Memorial Project, go to Terrain of Memory at UBC Press.

WHN/BC 2010 Conference Sessions - links and info posted

Here is a recap with information links for those who were in the Zhindagee and BC Digitization sessions yesterday at the Women's History Network of BC's 2010 conference.

The first session, with Mahinder Kaur Doman Manhas, author of the new book, Zhindagee: Selected stories of our first daughters, was at turns sad, moving, funny, and heart warming. We heard readings from the book from Mahinder and also friends and relatives of women in the book. Good questions and so much to think about. One point mentioned about preserving women's history in general too was the importance of keeping journals - and preserving those already written by family. With the family's permission, excerpts from one woman's previously unpublished manuscript are included in the book. I can't wait to read all the stories in the book myself.

This is a limited edition book, and Mahinder suggests people, if they can, buy one to donate to a library or other place where more people will be able to read it. (I'm donating a copy to the BC Genealogical Society library, for example.) There will be an Zhindagee event early in the New Year in Vancouver and probably books will be available there.

West Beyond the West: British Columbia's history, heritage and culture: westbeyondthewest.ca/search

In the second session, Ken Cooley, Associate Librarian at the University of Victoria Library, spoke about both the BC Digitization Coalition and the University Library's current projects, and Lara Wilson, University of Victoria Archivist, spoke about her Archives' digitial initiatives and about the Archives Association of British Columbia.

Although a good number of projects to digitize BC historical materials are completed or underway, these are mainly from larger institutions (with larger budgets). Among other things, the BC Digitization Coalition is working to promote digitization in smaller institutions and groups by promoting the use of the West Beyond the West portal website, and the free software Digital Collection Builder, and by providing training for this and some support. Soon there will be a Digital Collection Builder workshop at the University of Victoria, for instance. And the Archives Association of British Columbia offers education sessions, some by distance education, including Managing Your Oral History Project and Managing Archival Photographs. These are open to members and non-members.

The University of Victoria Library and the University Archives digital collections - Digital Collections A-Z - already includes several resources of particular importance to women's history - the British Colonist newspapers 1858-1910, selections from the records of Peggy and Nicholas Abkhazi, photographic glass-plate transparencies by Herbert Geddes depicting life in Japan c. 1910, military oral histories, and BC Provincial Normal School oral histories. Projects underway include future digitization of a collection of lesbian and bi-sexual oral histories (to be on-line in 2011) and of Government of British Columbia publications, and of materials from the Victoria Women's Movement Archives, held by the UVic Archives. Funds for this last project are being raised right now; read about it in Times Colonist article by Katherine Dedyna, November 4, 2010. Lara Wilson stressed that the University of Victoria Archives collects local history, as well as University materials. Contact her if you have a collection that may be of interest there.

I just received my copy of the latest Room Magazine. Had my first browse through and I'm really looking forward to reading all of this issue - the theme is 'Past and Present'. The fiction writers included are Pearl Luke. Tracy Oliver, Lorrie Miller, Kristin Andrychuk, Jann Everard, Heather Debling and Valerie Laub, and the poets, Jan Wood, Adele Graf, Sandy Pool, Elena E. Johnson, Janet Hepburn, Lesley Washington, Lauren Carter, Bronwen McRae and Lesley Pasquin. And there's more...

This issue includes a thank you to the Women's History Network of BC (WHN/BC) as Room Magazine was one of the participants in WHN/BC's Women's History Fair earlier this year. Thanks for the thanks, Room!

And I noticed that two of my genealogy friends are mentioned, Lorraine Irving who gives cemetery tours at Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver and Celia Lewis who teaches genealogy.

Room Magazine began with the Growing Room Collective in Vancouver in the 1970s and was originally called Room of One's Own - from Virginia Woolf 's writing, so Room's already made lots of history itself. It's now Canada's oldest literary journal by and about women.

Through dance, music, and a literary/historical presentation, two significant groups of women will be highlighted: the vivandieres who brought supplies to 19th-century troops, and members of the Women's Land Army who provided agricultural labour during WW I and II while the men were away overseas.

Half of all proceeds will be donated to Doctors Without Borders.

Speaker Dr. Marcia Braundy is a founder and member of the original IMAGES collective, and Editor of the CD, IMAGES, Kootenay Women's Paper (1973-1991) and she will share illustrated stories of the times.

If you were at the Women's History Network of BC's Women's History Fair in Vancouver in April, you will remember seeing the West Kootenay Feminism display and perhaps, even leafing various issues of IMAGES and speaking with Marcia Braundy.

The 85 issues of IMAGES - Kootenay Women's Newspaper, published over 19 years from 1973 to 1991, represents the early writings of many of British Columbia's prize-winning women authors and artists as they struggled to develop their personal and political perspectives on Second Wave Feminism. In writing by rural BC women and others, it tells the stories of women and feminist groups from Trail, Nelson, Kaslo, the Slocan Valley, Salmo, Fruitvale, Rossland and Castlegar, for instance, of the Nelson and District Women's Centre (1972-), the oldest rural women's centre in Canada.

Theme issues addressed topics like: Aging, Health, Machinery, Sexuality, Reproductive Rights, Working, Lesbian life, Mothers and Daughters, The Arts, Media, Feminism, Technology, Violence Against Women, Travel and Relationships, while other issues covered local, regional and national news from feminist perspectives.

The innovative Kootenay Feminism website, covering 1970 to present, launched in February this year (2010) and includes a timeline, historical minutes, posters, samples of IMAGES, interviews, music, photographs and more. The newspaper issues are available on CD.

The book launch for Women on Ice: The Early Years of Women’s Hockey in Western Canada by Wayne Norton will be at the Rhizome Cafe in Vancouver on Sunday, January 24, 2010 at 6 pm.

"Women on Ice follows the fortunes of the Vancouver women as they encountered teams from Victoria and New Westminster and the powerful squads from Calgary and Edmonton — teams that deserve to be legendary, but are now largely forgotten. Also profiled are teams from what was the geographic heart of women’s hockey in British Columbia until the First World War, the Kootenays, as well as some of the dominant teams of the postwar years from Alberta."

Women on Ice, published by Ronsdale Press in 2009, is thoroughly researched, easy to read and well illustrated too.

The author, Wayne Norton, has been researching women's hockey in the West for many years. He's a former teacher, and now is a writer and historical consultant. He's written two previous Canadian history books, A World Apart: The Crowsnest Communities of Alberta and British Columbia and Kamloops History: Fictions, Facts and Fragments.

This talk by Sally Mennill explores the post war history of c-sections and childbirth.

Sally Mennill is a PhD Candidate at the University of British Columbia's Centre for Women’s and Gender Studies. Her research focuses on women's health history and the history of childbirth in Canada, especially on caesarean sections in post-war Canada. Sally is a labour and post-partum doula and she is active in the Vancouver doula community.

The Women’s History Network of British Columbia (WHN/BC) is a broadly based not-for-profit society that exists to enhance interest and encourage activity in women's history across BC and to celebrate the contributions women have made to the history of the province.

The North Vancouver Museum and Archives is again presenting walking tours of North Vancouver's waterfront in 2009 with the WaterFront Production's costumed Shipyard Guys and Gals. Hear all about North Vancouver's wartime history.

Some time ago I took a tour and can recommend this - fun and educational! Walking tours are a great way to learn about local history. I'll be going again this year.

These tours are free and are wheelchair accessible. About 45 minutes each. Groups with special needs are welcome. You don't need to pre-register.

In 1912, Ohio voters turned down a state amendment that would have allowed women to vote, but Ina and her mum didn't have to wait quite 10 years as Ina predicted until they could vote.

Although most of Ohio's national representatives voted against the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution which prohibited each of the states and the federal government from denying any citizen the right to vote because of that citizen's sex, the Amendment was ratified, August 18, 1920.

Ohio state representatives did then pass the Amendment, and Ohio was the fifth state to ratify the 19th Amendment.

Good Wives and Wise Mothers: Japanese Picture Brides in Early Twentieth-Century British Columbia

Without the large influx of Japanese wives following the Gentlemen's Agreement of 1907, permanent settlement of Japanese may not have taken place. These brave, enterprising and adventurous women laid the foundation of the society and molded the character of their Canadian-born children.

Guest speaker Michiko Midge Ayukawa lives in Victoria, British Columbia and has published widely on Japanese Canadian history.

Her most recent book is Hiroshima Immigrants in Canada, 1891-1941, UBC Press 2008. A book signing follows the talk.

Today is International Women's Day (IWD).

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon last year designated a multi-year " campaign calling on people and governments the world over to unite to end violence against women and girls. The campaign will run through 2015, the target date for achieving the Millennium Development Goals. The link with the Goals is clear. We must stop the habitual and socially ingrained violence that mars lives, destroys health, perpetuates poverty and prevents us from achieving women’s equality and empowerment...." This week, in honour of IWD, his Deputy Secretary-General Asha-Rose Migiro launched the Secretary-General’s database on violence against women.

Mary Campbell, only surviving member of UBCs 1930 World Champion Women's Basketball Team dies

Mary Campbell, Physical Education teacher at John Oliver High School in Vancouver, BC, from 1938-1961, passed away yesterday, 4 March, 2009 at 98 years of age. She was the school's oldest known surviving teacher.

Mary Campbell was also the only surviving member of the University of British Columbia's 1930 World Champion Women's Basketball Team which won 18-14 over France.

In 2007 when the 1930 UBC Women's Basketball Team was inducted into the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame, she was one of only two surviving members. Her teammates were: Rene Harris, Claire Menton, Jean Whyte, Rettie Tingley, Marian Shelley, Lois Tourtelotte, Florence Carlisle, Thelma Mahon, and coach Jack Barberie.

The team was also inducted into the UBC Sports Hall of Fame, the British Columbia Sports Hall of Fame and the Basketball BC Hall of Fame.

Mary Campbell first taught English and coached girls' basketball in Penticton, then moved to Templeton Junior in Vancouver. After that she went to John Oliver where she worked till 1961 when she took a position at Windemere Secondary in Vancouver. In April of this year, the John Oliver Girls' Gymnasium is to be renamed in her honour.

Theme: Historical Perspectives on Women, Sports and Physical Recreation

Call for Papers and Presentations (Deadline June 30, 2009)

The Women’s History Network of British Columbia (WHN/BC) invites proposals for papers and oral or visual presentations on the theme of Historical Perspectives on Women and Sport and Physical Recreation.

Topics might focus on individual sportswomen or women’s sport teams, on the role of sports and outdoor recreation in girls’ and women’s groups and in female education, on media coverage of women’s sports and public recognition of women athletes or sport groups, or on women’s role in (or exclusion from) sports organizations, for example.

The Women’s History Network of British Columbia (WHN/BC) is a broadly based not-for-profit society that exists to enhance interest and encourage activity in women's history across BC and to celebrate the contributions women have made to the history of the province.

WHN/BC’s yearly conference, during Canada’s Women’s History Month in October, is an opportunity for networking, sharing & learning about new ideas & current research into women’s history.

The Women’s History Network of B.C. is committed to inclusivity with respect to gender, race, ethnicity, class, sexual orientation, region, religion and ability.

Location: The 2009 Conference will be in Vancouver in October. Locations to be announced.

Deadline for proposals – June 30, 2009
